What are capillaries?
Capillaries are small delicate blood vessels that are an integral part of the microcirculation of the human body. They allow exchange of water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and waste chemicals between blood and surrounding tissues.
What are broken capillaries?
Broken capillaries are small reddish in colour threads under the skin. When the capillary walls narrow and widen too quickly it causes them to detach from the capillary muscles. This results in the blood to seep out. Although damage has occurred it is not a risk to your health.
Broken capillaries are most commonly found on the cheeks or nose due to the delicate nature of the skin on the face.
What causes broken capillaries?
Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in the human body. When the skin is dry, dehydrated or sensitive it causes the skin to become delicate. As a result the skin is too thin and is not able to defend its self well from the environment. When the skin is exposed to the environment in this dry/sensitive state the capillaries are easily targeted.
Conditions that cause broken capillaries are:
Hot air- Heating.
Scrubbing your face too often or vigorously.
Washing your face with water that is too hot.
Facial injuries. If the skin or tissue has been damaged.
Sunburn/excessive sun exposure.
Moving from one extreme temperature to another.
Pressure exerted on the skin.
Age- As you age the skin becomes thinner.
Hereditary. You can have a predisposition if other family members have it.
Excessive consumption of alcohol over a long period of time.
By taking these factors into consideration you can take precautions to prevent broken capillaries but also to prevent the condition from deteriorating.
