Progesterone and estrogen are the main hormones responsible for the menstrual cycle. Estrogen is dominant in the first half and progesterone in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone also helps the body to use fat for energy, enhances thyroid hormone action, and improves sexual drive. Testosterone is the principle hormone in a group of hormones called androgens.
