Banish the signs of ageing around the eyes…

“The eyes are the window to the soul!”

The skin around the eye area is one of the thinnest of the entire body and therefore very delicate; becoming one of the first areas on the face to show the signs of the ageing process. The first area of the body a person will look to when engaging in conversation with someone is the eyes and it is therefore quite noticeable when signs develop.
Society tends to consider fine lines and wrinkles around men’s eyes as attractive and categorise them as laugher or smile lines. Men’s skin is thicker than women’s and they tend to typically age more successfully than women. However regardless of gender, there comes a time when fine lines and wrinkles develop from laughter or smile lines into an aged and fatigued eye area.

Why do I have the signs of ageing around my eyes?

The appearance of ageing around the eye area is not just limited to fine lines and wrinkles. Several factors can individually or collectively give the appearance and signs of “ageing” around the eye area, these include:

  • Puffiness
  • Dehydration lines
  • Blue/purple tone to the skin colour
  • Rough texture to the skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes
  • Crow’s feet- Fine lines and wrinkles at the side of the eyes
  • Slackening of the eye lid
  • Slackening of the brow
  • Red, off white or bloodshot eyeballs
  • Pigmentation spots

There are a number of reasons why the above factors develop around the eye area:

  • Over exposure to the sun without appropriate protection
  • Continuing Lack of/disturbed sleep
  • Poor diet and excess salt
  • Toxin build up
  • No eye care/cream
  • Applying your facial moisturiser over the eye area
  • Persistent pulling, tugging or rubbing of the eye area
  • Long-term Allergies
  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Proteins (collagen & elastin) diminishing as we age

What solutions are available to help banish the signs of ageing around the eyes?

There is a diverse range of treatments, products and solutions to help banish the signs of ageing around the eyes;

Skincare treatments

Skincare treatments suitable for your concerns and needs may provide short term and long term results at reducing the signs of ageing around the eyes. There are different treatments available designed to help the differing stages or severity of the concerns and signs:

Skin needling– This is a great treatment for clients that are looking for a longer-term solution to help reduce the appearance of ageing in the eye area. The device is pen shaped and contains 10 tiny stainless steel needles. It is worked over the area along with a firming and smoothing serum to initiate the body into sending vital proteins and growth factors; in turn aiding to reduce and smooth the line, wrinkle and pigmentation.

Injectables– To treat lines and wrinkles we use a muscle relaxing agent. The solution is injected into the depressor muscles that support the skin structure; relaxing the muscle to initiate the area to lift and fine lines and wrinkle to smooth, lasting averagely 3 months. This treatment can help patients who have deep set wrinkles, slackening of the facial skin or a drooping eye area/eye lid due to a slackened brow. Results may vary per individual.

Microdermabrasion– This manual form of exfoliation treatment may be used to reduce fine lines and improve hydration. The device can be used in two different ways:

  • The hand piece simultaneously pushes crystals onto the skin and suctions the used crystals and dead skin cells back into the machine; sloughing away dead skin cells and helping to smooth fine lines and congestion.
  • A stainless steel gritted head covered in diamond like grains is used instead of crystals. It is worked over the skin to dislodge dead skin cells and suctions them away and back into the machine, rejuvenating and smoothing the surface of the skin.

Chemical peels contain naturally occurring acids sourced from; sugar cane, sour milk, fruits, vegetables, plants and bark. A solution is formulated to utilise one or more of these acids to help kick start the body into bringing about surface exfoliation on the treated area. The solution causes the dead and tarnished skin cells to shed for 2-3 days and may reveal a brighter, rejuvenated, hydrated, clearer and smoother complexion.

Results of any treatment may vary per individual as everybody is different and may respond differently to treatments mentioned.

Once you have seen substantial improvements from the skincare treatments you should follow the homecare maintenance tips below to ensure longevity of the results.

Homecare maintenance

You must maintain the eye area at home in order to prevent the concern reoccurring again; here are a few tips on how to do so:

Anti-ageing eye cream– The skin around the eyes is very delicate and therefore needs a cream designed specifically for that area. Apply an eye cream to the orbital bone of the eye before you apply your face moisturiser; it is important to apply in this order because often a moisturiser for the face can be too rich for the eyes and can cause puffiness. Anti-ageing eye creams can hydrate, firm and tone the skin. A few eye creams that our clients have seen great results with are:

  • Neostrata skin active intensive eye therapy
  • Neostrata Bionic eye cream
  • Lumixyl revitaleyes
  • Lamelle Dermaheal eye regeneration plus cream
  • Lamelle Nourish revitalise eye

Sunscreen– Apply a light weight sunscreen to any areas of the body exposed to the sun, even in the winter months as the UV rays responsible for skin damage are present all year round.
Sunglasses– Wear sunglasses all year round when exposed to direct light, not only to protect the area but to also prevent squinting which overtime creates lines and wrinkles.
Water– Toxins built up in the body can reveal their presence by causing a blue/purplish tone to the skin under the eyes. Drink plenty of water and aim for the daily recommended amount, as it will help flush any toxins that have built up.
Salt– Excess salt intake can cause the body to retain water and bloat, especially under the eyes.
Eye drops– Use an eye drop solution when your eyes are itchy, tired, reacting from allergies and dry. This will help soothe the eyes and reduce the likelihood of you feeling the need to rub or scratch them.

Are treatments to banish the signs of ageing around the eyes painful?

The majority of treatments to banish the signs of ageing around the eyes are considered painless and at the most a bearable sensation. For patients that find they have a low pain threshold we can apply a numbing cream to the area beforehand to prevent discomfort.
